Louisiana Waterthrush

Louisiana Waterthrush

work on paper

It was great to participate in the “Disappearing Birds Project” – organized by Jen Delos Reyes, where over 300 artists each painted a bird at risk of disappearing in North America. A version of the project was on display at the Co-Prosperity gallery this summer the show “In Concert with Jen de los Reyes”

I chose the Louisiana Waterthrush after finding just one sighting of this bird on our local park’s iNaturalist project, among over 50,000 observations. It was April 2020 and I wondered if the bird felt it was becoming a stranger in its own environment, as the world around it quietly changed.

For this painting, I used Gansai, traditional Japanese watercolors—a medium that was new to me and that I first encountered during my trip to Japan this past winter.
