Concert Grove Sky (Nico’s Walks Collection)

This piece, entitled “Concert Grove Sky,” is a part of my “Nico’s Walks” collection and was painted from the bench near the water fountain in the late fall in Prospect Park.

The concert grove pavilion was a delightful subject under the the clear blue sky and warmth of the yellow sun. The roof of the pavilion almost appears like a spaceship, a historic feature of the original design of the park since the 1800s. It had to be rebuilt a few times over the years– recently renovated, yet again– and is a lovely gathering place, a special “center of Prospect Park” according to Olmsted and Vaux.

I used a mixture of pencil and gouache to capture the grove of trees it sits in, with the patch of pure blue sky seen through the trees with snake-like branches reaching out across the scene. The roof of the pavilion is perched on small legs, almost like an insect. Or a darth vader helmet.  Greens, blues, and yellows dominate this artwork, with a pop of red in the trees and flashes of yellow from people walking past in the sun.
