Description

This composition, titled “Concert Grove Sky,” is a component of my “Nico’s Walks” collection. Painted on a bench near the water fountain in late fall, the Concert Grove Pavilion stood as a delightful muse under the crisp blue sky and warm yellow sun.

Reminiscent of a spaceship yet profoundly historic, the pavilion roof is a signature design from the park’s origins in the 1800s. Having endured multiple renovations over the years, it remains a beloved gathering spot, serving as a unique focal point in Prospect Park according to Olmsted and Vaux.

The medley of pencil and gouache techniques brings to life the pavilion’s grove of trees, the swath of pure blue sky peeking through, and the sinuous branches reaching across the scene. Perched on small legs, the pavilion roof invokes images of an insect or perhaps a Darth Vader helmet. Dominated by greens, blues, and yellows, the artwork features pops of red in the trees and flashes of yellow from passersby basking in the sun.
